I decided to take a break from writing for class on Monday and scope out/check up on my garden. All the rain the last couple of days makes me wonder if hydroponics would have been viable. Last year I had one raised bed garden (aka Box of Dirt) and last weekend I went and built another one. So now I have two boxes of dirt with which to grow things in.

The new box is in the foreground, with the older one to the rear. Scope out the peas below.

I used the fencing I put around the garden last year to keep what I thought were rabbits or squirrels from eating my tomato plants as a trellis for the peas. I was wrong, it was that evil tomato worm. Lettuce and ‘spring mix’ type of greenery for salads.

You can also see the black tubing I’ve used for the irrigation this year. I decided to go with low-pressure irrigation to save on water, and also it is easier to just turn it on and let it go. Eventually I’ll convert it to drip irrigation (just gotta change out the sprayers) to save even more water, and put it on a timer so I don’t have to worry about it in the summer when it’s too freakin hot.

I am tempting fate this summer and going for squash again. Zuchinni and yellow squash. We’ll see how they fare with the damned bugs this year. I’ve gleaned some tactics off the net in order to avoid the squash vin borers that decimated not one, not two, but all three attempts to grow some zukes last summer. Since I’ve started them so early the hope is that they will be good strong plants and I’ll get some fruits out of them prior to the possible bug killing spree.

This is the largest bean plant I have. I planted two varieties – garden beans and then yellow beans (wax beans is what they look like to me). I started this one from seed, as I did everything except the zuchinni and yellow squash. Here’s another shot of the garden with the rest of the bean plants and some broccoli.

The large patch on the right is going to be for the Roma tomatoes, I have four of those plants, but I’m going to give one away to a coworker. I also have several peppers and some basil plants that are going to be planted as well. And the last pic – the future garden plants. You can see some peppers, basil, and tomato plants, as well as some flowers. Those will go into pots or one of the gardens that are around the house. You can also see some of whatever flowers (the purple ones to the right) those are that managed to survive the winter and now are growing like they’re on crack. I believe they’re annual, but they never died over the winter, so…

That’s it. Wheeee. Back to my paper. Not so wheee.

Yes, I know in some of the pics you can see some crap on the lens. I haven’t gotten around to P-shopping it out. I don’t do very much Photoshopping, but really just to fix things like that or correct my poor camera skills (exposure, etc).
