Holy City vs. Emerald City

The P&C Posted this story, and I have to say that while I am not from here, some of these are indeed untrue but there’s an ounce of truth in what the rest of the nation thinks of SC. You can thank such people as Strom Thurmond, Governor Sanford, etc. Suffice to say, I think that SC is just as well prepared to land a Boeing facility as Seattle (Everett) is, even though Seattle holds a place in my heart that I should like to live there one day. For the record, I’m not a huge fan of large unions…I feel that for the most part they have outlived their usefulness and if not properly managed can serve only to hurt and damage the industry and the workers for which they exist. Look at Detroit and the ungodly salaries that people get paid and the pension packages. Biting the hand that feeds them, indeed (I digress…).

One poster from Bellevue, Wash., summarized the Palmetto State this way: “S.C. has an obscene tax base based on liquor, cigarettes, sales, and income. … If you wonder how they get away with it, just move there and talk to the people. Not very educated, hate change, think liberals are evil, and don’t mind working a production line for minimum wage (except when they are competing with the illegals, then they mind), and think educated people are snobs.”

I hate to admit it, but it’s hard for me at first to take some highly technical support seriously from someone who sounds like a country bumpkin…BUT – anyone should realize you shouldn’t judge books by their covers – or people by their accents. Not educated – the graduation rate here speaks volumes about that…and the truth in said statement. They do hate change here. Sorry folks, it’s true. SC is mired at times in not changing. There are is also some very forward momentum as well. SC is very conservative…and I do think at times anything that doesn’t mesh with the church is considered liberal and therefore must be frowned upon and eradicated. I can’t speak to the production like comment… and I don’t think that in SC educated people are viewed as snobs…most of the time.

Fortunately, Charleston, in my opinion should not be lumped together with the rest of the state, because I feel Charleston is practically an island in a sea of South Carolina. Chas is great…just stinks that it’s surrounded by SC.

And before I get any comments about if I think all of this then I should get on 95 and head back North.. well it isn’t that bad, and I like it here for the most part, enough to stay at least. November will be starting my 13th year here…so…yeah.
