On The Laziness of People

Today, after journeying to Lowe’s and Home Depot doing some comparison shopping (Lowe’s prevailed, as expected and desired), Eric and I went to BiLo to pick up some stuff. They were having a sale on Pepsi products, and I loooove Pepsi so it was worth stocking up. With the rising cost of soda (~$4.00 for a damned 12 pack!), four 12-packs for $9.88 is a good deal…and since I don’t have anyone else randomly buying me soda, every bit counts (Note: I am not poor, just mindful of needs and wants). In any event, Eric got some stuff he wanted and I made it out of the store before he did so I headed to my truck to load up the soda and the other items I bought. I had to rearrange some of the crap in the back of my car – tennis rackets from outings with Jamie, flip flops from the beach – you get the idea. When I had enough space I decided to text Eric so he didn’t sit around and look for me inside the store before he left. As I pulled out the phone at the back of the truck, a man pulls up and honks his horn once. I look up, and then go back to what I’m doing. After I sent it I deduced that he must have been honking at me because he wants the spot, as he was sitting there almost in an expectant manner (if I car can look expectant?). I unloaded the cart and then walked it to the cart corral, which was adjacent to the vehicle in question. As I walked back the driver rolled down his window and said, “You are a natural born asshole.” And I responded to him, “I’m an asshole because you’re too lazy? You could have parked out there and been inside the store already.” “You’re an asshole,” he repeated. And I said “Thanks!” and walked back to my car. By the time I started it and pulled out, he had parked in another spot, further away. Lazy AND impatient.

I think every one of us has seen where people will sit there and wait for several minutes for a vehicle they think is about to leave. All for the sake of not having to walk as far. How lazy is that? It surely couldn’t be because he wanted to save time, because as I noted he could have parked and been inside by the time I finished. I wasn’t about to expedite my loading the truck because HE wanted MY spot (okay, so it’s not my spot, but I was using it at the time). I will add that I didn’t slow down my loading the truck either, I did it the same way I’d do it regardless. Now, if it was like jammed full of cars, I’d have expedited, but oh hell no am I going to hurt myself because he’s too damned lazy. Sign of the times.
