It happens.

By Chris | October 8, 2007

The front article on Yahoo!’s home page was the one regarding the 20yo off-duty deputy that shot and killed a number of people in Wisconsin.  That sucks.  My first question was:  20?  An officer?  Scary.  In SC you have to be 21.  Not that a year makes a whole lot of difference.  But it seems the same idiocy that were asking ‘why it happened?’ after the shooting in at Va. Tech earlier this year has spread to Wisconsin.

The residents of a remote northern Wisconsin community struggled to understand Monday how a sheriff’s deputy who killed six young people and critically wounded another could have become a law enforcement officer.

It’s simple:  He wasn’t a wack job when he applied.  Duuuuuuh.

David Franz, 36, who lives with his wife two houses from the duplex where the shooting occurred, said it was hard to accept that someone in law enforcement was the gunman.

“The first statement we said to each other was, how did he get through the system?” Franz said. “How do they know somebody’s background, especially that young? It is disturbing, to say the least.”

The same reason that I stated above.  Also the same reason that there are priests that molest little boys.  Because they weren’t fucking crazy at the time they started.  Is that so hard to believe?   And he asks how they know someone’s background when they’re that young.  Um, the same way they check yours, buddy.  Tests, psych evals, etc.  Duh.  Maybe we should wait until people are 45 before they can be a police officer, then they’ll have enough ‘history’ for Mr. Franz to feel comfortable.

“He was nice. He was an average guy. Normal. You wouldn’t think he could do that.”

You know what, like I said when the Va Tech shooting occurred - of all the people on this blue and green ball we call home there are bound to be some errant people.  Humans are animals too, and we snap too.  Who knows, and we will probably never know, what causes some people to just flip out and do abnormal things.  It’s the way it is.  Deal with it.

Yeah, I’m cranky.  I hate that the media posts stupid sensational articles about incidents like this.  How about we report the news instead of trying to make it sensational.  Report some facts when you have them instead of speculating ‘how he could get through the cracks’ etc etc.

Yea Chris, it was a sad story and people were killed. NEWS stories should be just that..not what the neighbor next door thinks.

But if the media only reported the facts, then weathermen couldn’t scare the sh*t out of us screaming over and over about killer storms coming that MIGHT be the end of the world, with vivid descriptions of what MIGHT happen if the tide were to rise high.

Yes, I want to know the weather - and the news - but skip the dramatic speculation.

Have you seen the series of shows the National Geographic, TLC, Discovery, History have had on in reference to those ‘it could happen’ type of scenarios? Meteors hitting Earth, tsunamis, volcanoes.
