Tragic

By Chris | August 6, 2007

An officer trying to shoot a snake accidentally shot/killed a 5yo boy in Noble, OK.  That’s soooo horrible.  And even for me who tends to dislike children.  Now, logic would say that there are more important ways to off a snake than shoot at it.  I’d also have to say that I remember being taught in the Air Force to be sure what’s behind what you’re shooting at.  Der.  It’s sad because an innocent bystander was killed - not by someone with malicious intent - but an officer attempting to do good.

Tracy has little doubt. “I’m not saying the cop shot him on purpose,” he said. “But let me tell you — if I had a kid and put him in this car and didn’t put him in a car seat and he got killed on the way to town, they’d charge me with murder … and what this cop did is a lot worse than that.”

Okay, this is the only part of the story I dislike.  While we know that Mr. Tracy is very distraught and traumatized - who wouldn’t be -  but he’s not comparing apples to apples in his last statement (and he even admits this in the first part).  If the officer was trying to shoot the snake while the child held it would be a better comparison, or something equally as ignorant as not putting your child in a car seat (though I see children running free in minivans somewhat often around here).  Oh, and it’d probably manslaughter or some derivative in that case - not murder (generally speaking).

My heart goes out to the family of the little boy, and also to the officer as well (I’m sure he/she is devastated as well).
