Well, um, don’t do the crime then

I caught this story on Yahoo! News regarding the imprisonment rate disparities.   Personally, my first reaction after reading most of it was…well…if a certain demographic commits more crime then of course they’d be imprisoned more.   If all the polka-dot people were stealing cars, then of course there’d be more of them in jail than the striped people who didn’t steal cars.   DUH.

Such figures “reflect a failure of social and economic interventions to address crime effectively,” as well as racial bias in the justice system, said Marc Mauer, the [Sentencing Project] executive director.

So it’s the law-abiding citizens and society’s job to fix this?   I’m sorry that they feel that the rest of us are responsible for the actions of the rest of the country.   It’s not our fault that people commit crimes, nor is it our fault that they got caught.   If they didn’t do the crime, then they wouldn’t have anything to be caught for!   And the argument that it’s due to their economic status (or lack thereof) is bullshit.   I mean seriously, there are lots of people that are not well off that do not turn to crime.   Conversely, there are plenty of people who are well off that do turn to crime (Mr. Ravenel….).   Regarding the extracted statement above – I’d have to say if we are imprisoning the people who commit the crimes regardless of race, etc then I think we’re addressing crime, are we not?

Clearly another case of a bleeding heart organization that assists people in not taking responsibility for their own actions.   Lovely.   Like we need another one of those around.
