Loooooong Weekend

This weekend was long. Hell, this week was long. From Tuesday onward seems like a blur. It felt like I woke up Tuesday and finally laid down last night. In reality, I woke up Thursday at about 2:00. Went to work at 7:00, left at 4:00 AM, got an hour of sleep rest, and then went to the fire department at 6:30 to attend the memorial. All told, I laid down Saturday morning at about 2AM. I dunno how many hours it is, but it was a lot. It was a hot weekend too. Polyester + Heat = sweaty hot firefighters.

Brandon’s Truck from CFD – Engine 10

The support we received from the public was amazing. Local businesses and individuals donated food, drinks, services. People thanked us when they saw us out. During the funeral procession, people pulled over and stood outside their cars.

I have no idea who this might be.

I’m glad to have it behind us; however I’m sad to see them go. Every day we, as a fire service, respond to calls never thinking about what might happen to us when we get inside the truck, fire up the diesel, light it up and pull out of the station. We never go out to a call thinking we won’t come back, and it’s tragic when some don’t come back, having paid the ultimate price.

To all nine of the Charleston Firefighters – may you rest in peace, and we’ll see you at the station house up there.
