And I thought I complained alot…
Everyone who’s been downtown since they finished the new Cooper River Bridge has seen the little low curb they put in the middle of Meeting Street. I personally don’t see it as that big of a deal, but they’re making a stink about it down there.
It has never hindered my passage down Meeting St, nor has it ‘encouraged’ me to drive faster, as the article states. You have to drive somewhat near the speed limit down there because people indiscriminately cross the street wherever and whenever they want instead of using crosswalks like they are supposed to – something the article acknowledges. I even find it amusing to see that they tried to see if it violated the Americans With Disabilities act in their effort to have it removed. The article also stated that ambulances were ‘unable’ to move due to the little curb and the cars around them. That curb is no different than the curbs in the rest of the area, you can drive over them. I’ve done it in my truck before when running code to a call.
The problem is that people don’t like change, and now the people that live there can’t make a left into their driveway from the opposite side of the street, and that people who are not crossing the street properly stop on the little curb. Charleston should make jaywalking illegal and then just ticket everyone. That’d be funny and may potentially solve it. Oh! And think of the killing they’d make by CofC, where the kids just wander out in the street, ambivalent to passing traffic.
The best part of the article is where SCDOT has stated they have no intention of removing it. Three cheers for SCDOT!
