Stupid Federal Government

By Chris | May 31, 2005

I just finished taking some online bullshit course about National Incident Management System (NIMS).  Basically, the Fed came up with a plan to make sure that all agencies an interoperate in the event of a multi-agency emergency.  That makes sense…I agree with that.  We already have an Incident Command System (ICS) that is compatible.  My gripe about it is the use of plain text.  IE, not using 10-codes.  They basically want you to use the radio like you're on a fucking telephone.  To me it's very unprofessional and stupid.  It's easier to say I'm 10-24  than saying “Assignment completed.”  It also allows people to use multiple terminology, rather than an established one.  For example, in place of 10-24, one could say “Assignment Completed” or “We're all done here”  or “We're leaving the scene”  etc etc.  It sounds fucking stupid.  I also disagree with it based on medical calls and HIPAA compliance.  If I have some sort of emergency at my house, say a seizure, I'd like that everyone in scanner land doesn't need to know.  Yes, you can find codes on the internet, but why make it that much easier.  Pfft.  Just a way for the Fed to have a hand in everything now.  Soon it will be communist China.

We had a medical call tonight that I responded to.  It's generally acceptable to mark up (tell dispatch) on the radio that we're on the way, so they know not to call the next backup fire company.  Well I did so, and I got my butt chewed (not really, but it was stupid) because the duty officer marked up afterwards and he told me not to do it.  I think he was confused about how Central's alarm procedures work, but whatever.  I believe he was just cranky or something and took it out on me.  Fine!  See if I fucking show up to the next bullshit EMS call in the middle of the night.  For the record, NO ONE else responded, so you woulda thought he'd have just left well enough alone rather than proceeding to tell me I was wrong when I know I was right.  What the fuck ever.  I thought about quitting the fire department on my way home actually.  Bastards.
